Semarang, March 16, 2025 – In an effort to strengthen the relationship between academia and industry, the Department of Naval Architecture at Universitas Diponegoro successfully held the second session of the “Sinergi Kampus dengan Alumni” webinar series, titled “Synergy between the Department of Naval Architecture and the Classification Bureau”. This event was organized to enhance understanding and collaboration between students, alumni, and the industry, particularly concerning maritime safety and the role of classification bureaus in ensuring sustainable ship operations.

The webinar featured two key speakers who are experts in their fields. Dani Maulana, ST, MM, a Senior Surveyor at PT. Biro Klasifikasi Indonesia (BKI), shared his experience and knowledge regarding the implementation of the International Safety Management (ISM) Code and International Ship and Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code in ship operations. Dani emphasized the importance of effective safety management to prevent accidents, often caused by human factors and inadequate management.

Meanwhile, Andi Trimulyono, ST, MT, Ph.D., a lecturer from the Department of Naval Architecture at Universitas Diponegoro, moderated the session. Dr. Andi also provided insights into the current challenges and developments in the maritime industry and the importance of synergy between education and industry to produce competent professionals in the field.

One of the main topics discussed in this webinar was the importance of applying the mandatory ISM Code for all ships worldwide. The ISM Code not only focuses on the safety aspects of ships but also involves efforts to prevent environmental pollution caused by maritime activities. Dani Maulana explained that the implementation of a good safety management system must begin with top management commitment and extend to its execution on the ground, including the need for training and readiness among the entire ship crew in facing emergency situations.

Additionally, this webinar highlighted case studies of major maritime accidents, such as the Exxon Valdez oil spill and the Prestige disaster, illustrating how crucial proper safety management is to avoid significant losses, both in terms of human safety and environmental damage.

Through this event, participants were also given insights into the vital role of classification bureaus like BKI in ensuring that ships comply with the safety standards set by international organizations, as well as the need for closer collaboration between industry and academia to create safe and environmentally friendly operational standards.

With the successful organization of this webinar, it is hoped that it will encourage students to better understand the challenges faced by the maritime industry and be more prepared for the workforce upon graduation.
